Michaelmas!

Today is the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels. Goose and apple are two of the traditional foods of this day. In England, Michaelmas marked one of the quarters of the year; quarterly rents were due on this day, fairs were held, and today the fall school term is still known as the Michaelmas term.
When I was younger, I would always receive bookmarks and other small gifts with my name's meaning. They all said, "Michele - Like God." That absolutely horrifies me now! St. Michael earned his name when Lucifer sought to be "Like God," and Michael thundered, "Who is like God?"
St. Michael is the patron saint of many including policemen and soldiers. (I thought that might interest you, Jennifer!)

"St. Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls."

"Everlasting God, who hast ordained and constituted the services of Angels and men in a wonderful order; Mercifully grant that, as thy holy Angels always do thee service in heaven, so, by thy appointment, they may succour and defend us on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord."
